Stoogey took them into the small circular room at the bottom of the cellar. As the heavy door opened, dust flung out in every direction, and a large creaking noise groaned through the room.
Inside sat an old man wearing a dark robe. His long white beard trailed over the table and down to the floor.
“Ahh … it’s … you two fine … people?” the old man said, his long boney finger sticking out in front of him and pointing at Skellian.
“Erm,” said Skellian, “yes, it is. It’s us. Ain’t that right ol’ Shootey McTooty over there?”
“That’s right, Skell. Now, listen here, man. Who are you?”
Stoogey butted in, and put his hands together while performing a small bow over the table. “This … me dear lads, be master Magery o’ barrels. He’s the keeper of the sunken ale that ye be wantin’.”
McShoots looked confused. “This old cretin is the keeper of the … what? Sunken?”
Skellian slapped McShoots on the shoulder and laughed. “Don’t ye be worryin’ now, lad. I’m sure these two fine gentlemen here know what they are doin’. Now, Magery, do be so kind as to show us your wares … or sumin’.”
With that, Magery nodded, and pulled down the cloak from around his head. He put his hands out in front of him and started turning them in a clockwise fashion, as if some invisible orb was between them. “He he hee, ya see. Here’s me wares ye be askin’ for, ol Skellian of the Salts.”
Joe McShoots started screaming at the top of his lungs. “Skellian, how on this holy table of a beer tap does ol’ Magery here know your full title?”
Skellian laughed. “Well, lad. He’s … a mage. Ain’t he.”
“Oh yeah,” McShoots said. “I never thought of that…”
Between Magery’s hands, some green smoke puffed and swirled, and a small electric shock ran between his fingertips. There, before their eyes, appeared a bottle of purple liquid with a large X mark drawn on the label. “This, ye alcoholics ye, is the most fatal, liver-destroyin’, stomach-linin’ meltin’, eyeball-shakin’ concoction of nonsense that you’ll ever feast yer lips around. Feast ye eyes on her, lads. The Black Death.”
