They burst out the tunnel of light, and landed hard on the ground.

“What the hell just happened, Skell?” McShoots asked. “That was some sort of portal thing, ya get me?”

“Aye, lad,” Skellian said. He slowly got to his knees and dusted himself off. “What is this place?”

As they looked around, they realised they were surrounded by black, polished walls of stone. Immense pillars rose from the ground, and dead grey trees stuck awkwardly out of them.

“This place looks … absolutely dead,” said McShoots. “I mean, there’s nothing here. Not one damn thing. Not a single hootin’ tootin’-”

Skellian sighed. “Lad, quiet now.”

Why would the strange being send them here? It was all rocks and dead things.

In the distance, a large volcano errupted, sending red hot lava running down its side. “Woooo,” McShoots said. “I don’t like the look of that, Skell. I like my skin, and I’d bet that you like yours, too, am I right?”

Skellian scratched his beard, and spat. “Sure do, lad. Let’s hightail it.”

The two of them began running in the opposite direction. It felt like they’d been running for an hour, but nothing seemed to be getting closer to them. This was truly a barren wasteland.

Skellian skidded to a stop and put an arm out to stop McShoots, as a large portal opened in front of them. “Ha ha ha,” a familiar voice said. “Apologies, boys. It seems, in my haste, I’ve sent you to the wrong destination. This place right here is a final-battle type place. I was meant to send you to a nice inn.”

Joe McShoots hit Skellian’s hand out of the way, and exploded with rage. “What the shiny two-faced jug o’ ale are you talkin’ about?! You can’t mess us around like this, you, you, old decrepit bastard!”

The figure yawned, and snapped his fingers. Skell and McShoots went spiraling back through the tunnel of light.
