As the four of them left old Gerrad’s house, a young girl crossed their path. Her hood was up, and a small dagger was slid into her tall black boot on the left foot. Her face was shrouded in darkness.

“Gerrad,” she said darkly, nodding.

Joe Mcshoots raised an eyebrow. “Err, Gerrad, who on earth is this?”

Gerrad spat on the floor. “This is Edgy Bladesmith, the town assassin. She’s hard as nails.”

Magdalen nearly choked. “Your name. Is … Edgy … Bladesmith? You must be joking. Ok, fuck this. I’m being pranked. This is like some bad D&D session, surely? Come on. What’s going on here? Edgy bloody Bladesmith? My god.”

Gerrad’s eyes went as wide as pumpkins. “Mag! How dare you! Sorry, Edge. She’s a little cranky by the looks of it.”

Magdalen looked shocked. “Wait. You mean that truly IS your name? Well I’ll be fiddled with the back end of a broom. I’m dead shocked. Totally. I mean wow. Well, nice to meet you, I guess.”

Joe McShoots laughed. “So … I’m guessing this is the part where you join our merry band of adventurers and help us on our quest or sumin’, mrs Bladesmith?”

Edgy looked Joe McShoots up and down, frowning. “Dunno. Maybe. Who’s askin’?”

Joe looked around at his crew, confused. “Err … me?”

Edgy tucked her thumbs through her belt hoops, and said, “fuck it, I’m in. Wait, what’s the mission? In fact, doesn’t matter. I ain’t doing shit today anyway. I’ve got to be back by about nine thirty tomorrow night though. Old Chamberlind is doing another one of his tumble roll nights down the old swingin’ pony.”

Magdalen snorted. “Girl … you have just frazzled my mind beyond prepare. In fact, I feel stupider from you simply uttering that sentence. Now. Tell me. What are your skills, apart from sneaking up on people and opening their throats?”

Edgy Bladesmith thought for a while. “Not a lot. I’m pretty good at sneaking up on people and opening their throats though.”

Magdalen rolled her eyes. “Very well. Let’s do this thing, gang. Was that too corny? Oh whatever, let’s do this. Let’s go. Let’s skedaddle. Let’s hightail it.”

Gerrad slapped Magdalen in the face. “Finished?” he asked. Joe McShoots failed to contain his laughter.
